SQL Server backup error

Hello All,

Ray is having some issues with his SQL Server backup. All SQL experts that can assist please lend a helping hand. The FISG member that solves his problem will receive a book of his or her choice from O'Reilly. Here is Ray's issues:

I have a question regarding an error I am receiving while trying to backup one of our SQL 2008 databases. I'm writing you because I couldn't find where to ask this on the FISG website.

My error message:

"Backup of file 'XXXX' is not permitted because it contains pages subject to an online restore sequence. Complete the restore sequence before taking the backup, or restrict the backup to exclude this file.

BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.

I have been "googling" and reading blogs and can't seem to find any solutions. If you could spread the word, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

  1. To add to the sql question.... a couple of months ago we had to run an emergency online page restore on the database. Furhter, we just recently upgraded to sql server 2008.

  2. We were able to fix the database backup issue by creating a new database. We had to re-create the database because there was a corrupt page. First we created a new database. Then, we ran a "Script Table as" --> "Create to" --> "file", for each table in the original database. Then we combined all the scripts into one Query and executed tham at once. Then we imported the data from the original database into the new one.

Now the backups are working properly.
